Sanctuary Farm is proud to host the East Carolina University Equestrian Team.

ECU Equestrian is a club sport and functions as part of the Student Recreation Center. Club members participate in one lesson each week as well as mandatory team practices, fundraisers, and social events!

ECU Equestrian competes in Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association events as part of Zone 4, Region 3. Students on the horse show team travel to other schools in the region and ride the host school's horses. IHSA showing is a great test of the rider's ability to ride different types of horses. Team practice focuses on developing a rider's skills on a variety of different horses. Feel free to visit the ECU Equestrian website.

We are a club sport, and therefore we do not have the resources that some of the other teams that we compete against have. Here is a list of the requirements to be a team member:

  • Must be a full-time ECU student
  • Pay a $20/semester dues
  • Must have access to your own horse:
    • May own your own horse, or
    • May lease/half-lease one of Sanctuary Farm's horses:
      • Fees vary
      • Must sign contract to lease per semester (cannot lease month-to-month)
      • We have horses for all levels of riders (beginner to advanced)
  • Minimum of one lesson per week ($40 per lesson, private or group)
  • Mandatory one lesson and one team practice the week prior to an IHSA show ($40 per lesson and $40 per team practice)
  • Must own your own shoes apparel (helmet, shirt, coat, breeches and tall boots)
  • Must pay for all show fees ($20 per class and $15 per class coaching)
  • Team provides all tack and supplies
  • Must attend monthly meetings
  • Must attend and help with fundraisers (we host 2–3 schooling shows a year)
  • All skill levels welcome!
  • Must love horses and want to learn about stable management, daily care, feeding, wound care and of course riding. Riding is only 20% of being involved with horses.
